“…the performance was exhilarating and the opera a revelation.”

OPERANEWS

“Taichman’s direction privileged physical action, with strikingly beautiful movements…”

“Though simple, the modern-dress production by the director Rebecca Taichman, with sets and costumes by David Zinn, is at once fanciful and daring.”

“In an inspired touch, Ms. Taichman, the director, working with Mark Dendy, the choreographer, invents the character of Thanatos (Death), portrayed by a willowy and mesmerizing dancer, Catherine Miller. When the time comes, in a seductive dance, Thanatos approaches the confused, frightened Eurydice and kisses her on the lips to poison her.”

WALL STREET JOURNAL

“Ms. Taichman’s most ingenious directorial choice was the introduction of a character, the dancer Catherine Miller as Thanatos.”

HUFFINGTON POST

“Rebecca Taichman, the quick-rising director in whose hands NYCO general manager/artistic director George Steel has put this production…clearly revels in Telemann’s pre-Mozartian mix of comic and tragic modes. Rather than play it safe with a traditional staging of an opera few people know, Taichman makes Pluto, Lord of Hell, a corporate one-percenter whose heart is softened by the beauty of Orpheus’s music.
